Books for Professional Practice

New books

New books of interest to Professional Practice students arrive in the library throughout the year. I keep a list of new books for the Centre for Professional Practice updated whenever new titles arrive (this list also includes books for the Advanced and Specialist Healthcare course).

Books in the Drill Hall Library, Medway campus

The Drill Hall Library catalogue contains all the books currently held in the Drill Hall Library. When you have found the book you require, take a note of the location/shelfmark (the number which will be on the spine of the book) to help you pinpoint it on the shelves. These numbers are part of the Dewey Decimal system. If you find this confusing, please consult our pdf guide to finding books using the Dewey Decimal system.

These are some of the numbers where you will find your books :

  • Adult education - 374
  • Careers - 650.14
  • Ethics - 170-179 [business ethics: 174.4, educational ethics: 174.937]
  • Management - 658
  • Organisational behaviour - 302.35
  • Psychology of learning and education - 370.15
  • Psychology of work - 158.7
  • Research methods - 001.42 and 300.72
  • Work-based learning - 658.3124
  • Writing skills - 808

There are also many reference books such as specialist dictionaries available in the Drill Hall Library.

Although all the books needed for courses taught at Medway should be available in the Drill Hall Library, you may occasionally need to submit an inter-library loan request form for resources held at the University of Kent's Templeman Library in Canterbury. See the borrowing from other sites section on the Drill Hall website for further details.

Electronic books

e-books or electronic books are just like the books on the shelves, but accessible on-line using your university account. For University of Kent students, e-books are available through LibrarySearch (*not* the Drill Hall Library catalogue).

Reading lists

Each module has an online reading list. Depending on the module, this can include books, journals, journal articles, websites or other material. For books, it can be used to find out how many copies are in the library, and it will provide direct links to websites and electronic journal articles. The reading lists can be accessed via your Moodle modules (a link is in the left-hand column of each module) or directly at readlinglists@kent - Medway site - if you use this link, it is a good idea to Sign in (top right corner) to make sure that the links to articles etc work smoothly.

Renewing books

Books borrowed from the Drill Hall Library should be renewed through the Drill Hall Library catalogue. See the video below for details if you're not sure.
